DIY Mosquito Repellent

DIY Mosquito Repellent

In Japan, mosquitos start appearing with the first warm weather. The only way to keep them off is to use mosquito repellents and leggings. Every young Mum has a range of leggings in her wardrobe to cover the legs for park and palyground time. The possibly most common scent used in repellents is lemongrass and if you are like me, the smell of it is getting a little bit boring. How I wish that there were a perfumer who had the sense to make a range of repellents that actually smell good.

Since I like essential oils and blending I did some research in the essential oil field and found a couple of interesting scents that are listed to having repelling properties. On the list were:

  • peppermint
  • clove
  • thyme
  • patchouli
  • lavender
  • lemon
  • orange
  • geranium
  • and of course lemongrass

With these on the list we did a little blending and came out with the best smelling mosquito repellents available.

It was fun to make new blends. Wy don’t you make your own? All you need is a medium size tinted glass bottle, distilled water, about 30 drops of blended oils, add a drop of alcohol to dissolve the oils with the water. Shake before use.
