My family is originally from Zermatt which is a hidden away village with the most beautiful mountain as a piece of art at the end of the valley called the Matterhorn. My ancestors were the first ones to climb the mountain 150yrs ago which ended up in a tragedy where four men lost their lives, hitting the headlines of the international newspapers and placing Zermatt on the map of mountaineers and tourists. My family members were shattered and split over the tragedy. There was a lot of speculation on what truly occurred. Now, with one of the Taugwalder family members having received funding to do proper research, we are as close to the truth as never before.
The story is pictured in a tragic play set on the mountains above Zermatt right in front of the Matterhorn. Spoken in three languages (Swiss-German, French and English), it is a touching and specutacular play with the highest set above sea level in Europe.
It gave me the chance to bring the family history closer to my kids, also through the Matterhorn museum in the center of the village with pictures of my Grandfather, who was a famous author, from Zermatt, Hannes Taugwalder.
The village has many facettes and is an excellent place for vacation Summer and Winter time. We loved hiking down from Furi to my family house which is now a 4 star restaurant, Zum See, run by a lovely couple Max&Greti. In the family chapel we lite candles for the ones we lost and remember and the ones we love.
Waking up in my aunts house was bliss. With direct view of the Matterhorn set on a private hill with only another family house nearby.
Despite the summer heat we could not resist indulging in cheese fondue, dried meat and all the lovely soups made of mountain plants.
